Why AI Projects Fail: It Is Not the Technology
Most AI project failures are not technology failures. They are delivery failures dressed up in technical language.

The Three Patterns
1. Scope Without Boundaries
Traditional project management defines scope up front and manages change against that baseline. AI work does not behave this way. Models need iteration. Data quality reveals itself over time. Requirements shift as stakeholders see early outputs. Without a framework that expects and structures this iteration, teams either freeze scope too early (and deliver something irrelevant) or never freeze it at all (and deliver nothing).
2. Success Metrics That Miss the Point
"Model accuracy" is not a delivery metric. It is a technical metric. Delivery success in AI projects requires measuring whether the output changes a decision, reduces a cost, or improves an outcome that the business cares about. When teams optimize for technical metrics without connecting them to business impact, they build impressive demos that never reach production.
3. Governance That Does Not Fit
Standard governance cadences (weekly status, monthly steering) assume linear progress. AI work is non-linear. A team might spend three weeks on data preparation with nothing visible to show, then produce a working prototype in two days. Governance must adapt to this rhythm, or it becomes noise that teams learn to ignore.

The fix is not to abandon project management discipline. It is to adapt it.
